Liverpool have become Arsenal’s biggest rivals in the Premier League.
Manchester City fell off last season, and just when it seemed like the Gunners would be the favourites to win the Premier League title, Arne Slot’s side stepped up and delivered.
It was really disappointing to see Liverpool win the title ahead of Arsenal, but the Reds have played a part in inflicting more pain on the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta is now unlikely to sign one of his dream targets because of the Merseyside giants.
Liverpool could be the reason why Arsenal cannot sign Nico Williams
Nico Williams has been a target for Arsenal for a long time.
The Gunners are looking for reinforcements on their left flank, and the Athletic Club star was, in many people’s eyes, a great option.
Arteta made Williams his dream target for the left-wing role, but Arsenal’s chances of signing him are now next to zero.
Barcelona are the favourites to sign Williams, and Liverpool are the reason why the Catalans have gone in that direction.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Barca initially approached Liverpool to sign Luis Diaz, but the reigning Premier League champions rejected their advances.
That led to them turning to Williams, and Arsenal’s dream of signing the Spain international is all but dead as a result.
Romano said in a video on his YouTube channel: “Let me mention that Barcelona, it was around one month ago, made an approach to Liverpool for Luis Diaz, and Liverpool closed the doors to the first approach from Barcelona.
“Then, Barca started focusing on Nico Williams.”
Stats show that Arsenal’s new left-wing target is even better than Nico Williams
It is a shame that Arsenal are unlikely to be able to sign Williams this summer.
The Euro 2024 winner would’ve been a really exciting option, but the Gunners have turned their focus to an even bigger name now – Rodrygo of Real Madrid.
Stats over the last two seasons show that the Brazilian is even better than Williams.
| Games | Goals | Assists | |
| Rodrygo Goes in 2023/24 and 2024/25 | 104 | 31 | 20 |
| Nico Williams in 2023/24 and 2024/25 | 82 | 19 | 25 |
Rodrygo has directly contributed to 51 goals over the last two seasons, while Williams’ tally in the same period stands at 44.
Yes, an argument can be made that the Brazilian plays in a better team, but he has had to take part in tougher competitions as well.
To add to that, Rodrygo has mostly been forced to play in a position that he has not been happy to feature in. He will be much better in his preferred role on the left flank.
