Three losers from Martin Zubimendi’s transfer to Arsenal including potential exits and potential flop

Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, but it’s a transfer that is set to shake the whole squad.

The Gunners already have a tight-knit midfield core to the squad, one that Mikel Arteta is still looking to transform and take to the next level.

With Martin Zubimendi set to join Arsenal in the summer transfer window, the knock-on effects are set to be monumental.

Existing players for the north London outfit could face a snub in the side or an exit altogether in the transfer market.

So with that said, here’s a look at three players who could be impacted by Arsenal signing Martin Zubimendi.

Mikel Merino

A former teammate of Zubimendi’s at Real Sociedad, summer signing Mikel Merino, could be impacted by his compatriot joining him at the Emirates Stadium.

The Spaniard has struggled to get his Arsenal career off to the start he would’ve wanted when joining the club – largely due to injury in the opening months.

Since then, Merino has yet to nail down a place in the team, with extra competition likely to cause some problems for him, though he could get the best out of him too.

Jorginho

With just six months remaining on his contract, Jorginho is approaching a crossroads in his playing career at Arsenal.

The midfielder is now free to sign a pre-contract abroad if he should wish to leave the Gunners, while his long-term future at the club appears unclear.

At 33 years old, the years ahead will likely see Mikel Arteta move on beyond Jorginho, even if he does sign another contract.

However, the addition of Zubimendi for a role he usually plays may only signal an exit in the months ahead.

Thomas Partey

Another midfielder facing an uncertain future is Thomas Partey, who is now entering the final months of his contract at Arsenal too.

With the Ghanaian international able to sign a deal elsewhere, the arrival of Zubimendi could spell the end of his time with the Gunners.

Over his career at the club so far, Partey has struggled to make himself available due to injuries, though that has largely changed this season.

The availability of the midfielder, who has had to fill in at right-back, has been a bonus so far compared to previous campaigns.

Whether that could be enough to push through a stay remains to be seen, but the reality is that Zubimendi would only push him further away from first-team minutes.
