Arsenal are flying in the Premier League as they aim to challenge for the title, whilst they are also in the Champions League knockout stages.
Mikel Arteta’s side are two points off Liverpool in the league, but their outstanding recent form has meant that they are still competitive in the race, whilst a shock 1-0 defeat in Porto will need to be reversed in the second leg of their European tie.
All things considered, this is the best position Arsenal have been in for a long time on the pitch, and off it, the finances in the latest accounts published today are fairly healthy, but there is one notable aspect within them which shows that Arsenal have still been over-achieving somewhat.
Arsenal accounts show record commercial revenue
Arsenal’s 2023 accounts have now been published, and they show that Arsenal have recorded a record commercial revenue income of £175m.
An increase in fortunes on the pitch, which saw Arsenal lead the Premier League by the end of 2022, as well as a return to European football, have helped contribute to this.
However, despite this being the club’s record in this aspect, they are still a fair bit behind their rivals. Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United, as well as fellow title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool, all recorded higher commercial incomes than the Gunners, as per finance expert Kieran Maguire.
Arsenal are thriving compared to their rivals

Despite Chelsea and Spurs recording slightly higher commercial revenues, Arsenal are miles ahead of both on the pitch right now, and this will eventually lead to a financial gain.
Chelsea are languishing in mid-table, and are set to go another season without European football. This will likely affect their commercial income, and fans are furious with what they are witnessing on the pitch despite heavy spending.
Spurs are still some way behind Arsenal in the Premier League, and are not competing in Europe, with Arsenal also in the Champions League knockouts.
With Man United some way ahead of Arsenal commercially, it speaks volumes that on the pitch, Erik ten Hag’s side are nowhere near Mikel Arteta’s.
Arsenal have been smart in the market in terms of recruitment, as a lack of sales coupled with this lower commercial income has given them a slight financial disadvantage, but performances on the pitch have been sensational.
Signings such as Gabriel Magalhaes, Jorginho and Martin Odegaard have proven to be better than more expensive buys from the likes of Chelsea and Man United, and as a result, Arsenal’s current position as title contenders is one that the club should be happy with for now.
Arsenal are ahead of some rivals, and are going toe to toe with others at the top end of the table despite lower commercial revenues, and this points towards excellent squad recruitment and management in recent years after some poor spending in the last decade.
