According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal are pushing to sign Southampton star Ryan Bertrand on a free transfer this summer.
The former Chelsea man has decided against extending his current deal at the St. Mary’s. He is looking for one final big move in his career, and the Gunners are set to give him that opportunity in the coming weeks.
Many Arsenal fans aren’t really convinced by this. We all know how Edu’s previous free signings have turned out, and that has been a massive cause for concern among the supporters.
However, the trauma caused by Willian’s signing will not repeat if Arsenal manage to lure Bertrand in on a free transfer in the coming weeks. Here’s why…
Ryan Bertrand would be a very good signing for Arsenal
Every fan on the planet would love for their side to sign the best players in the world, even if the said player is a backup. Sadly, that is not sustainable, especially for a club like Arsenal who will be under immense financial pressure this summer.
If nothing changes between now and the end of the season, we will be without European football for next term. That reduces our revenue considerably, and Arsenal will have to use whatever money we have wisely.
That makes signing Bertrand an excellent idea. The Englishman is hugely experienced in the Premier League having played over 250 games over the years. He has the quality to hold his own against the best in the country, and that is a huge positive.
Kieran Tierney will be Arsenal’s first-choice left-back irrespective of who comes in. That makes spending big money on a backup a silly decision, and that is arguably why Edu and Mikel Arteta are so keen to bring the Saints star in for free.
Additional funds for other areas of the pitch
By signing Bertrand for nothing this summer, Arsenal will be able to use our funds on other important areas of the pitch. We need first-choice starters in numerous positions, and no quality player will be available for cheap.
Using the money reserved for a backup left-back on a new central midfielder makes so much more sense than forking out £20 million or so on someone who will only warm the bench when Tierney is fit.
Arsenal are right to target someone like Bertrand this summer. Yes, it will annoy a number of supporters, but it’s for the greater good and the decision could well prove to be one of Edu’s smartest moves yet.
