Why didn't Arsenal ever warm to Gallas?

Former Arsenal captain William Gallas has come out with yet more quotes that are sure to wind up some gooners, but I don’t really know why.
Gallas was a leader and a good player for Arsenal. He complained a lot about the same thing fans complained about all the time – lack of determination, lack of winning mentality and ultimately a lack of success. For some reason we’re allowed to moan all we want, but don’t like it when our own players show the same desire.
Unsurprisingly, it seems Gallas’ high expectations of his team-mates was just as unpopular in the changing rooms, hence his being stripped of the captaincy.
“When I was captain I wanted to give a message, but they didn’t get it,” he said. “I may have been clumsy, but the substance was right.
“I came from Chelsea where I won titles, and I wanted to share my experience, because I thought we missed commitment in our work.
“My message has not been understood and I am also responsible for that. But unfortunately the last season showed that team still misses something.”
Gallas wasn’t perfect, and his sit-down ‘tantrum’ after THAT game against Birmingham may not have been proffessional, but it showed he cared, and if John Terry or Steven Gerrard had done it, people would have been praising their passion. I think we could all relate to Gallas that day, even if he should have done better to take it on the chin and motivate us for the rest of the season.
Still, he wasn’t the problem. The lack of drive from his team-mates was, and that still shows now.
It’s also worth remembering how proffessional he was after having the armband taken away; some players would not have been able to take such embarassment, but he went on to enjoy some of his best form for Arsenal.
Moving to Spurs has certainly done him no favours in the eyes of Arsenal fans, but it’s not his fault Wenger didn’t rate him enough to offer him a new deal. Not his fault at all. Wenger for some reason doesn’t like old players, and certainly doesn’t like shouters in his changing room.
These latest quotes from Gallas don’t surprise me at all. I just think it’s a shame that the once great Arsenal Football Club couldn’t handle the expectations of a real winner.
