Why Mikel Arteta’s behind the scenes Bruno Guimaraes push is bad news for Martin Zubimendi

We all know by now that Arsenal and Mikel Arteta want to sign Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes this summer.

The Brazilian is available for the right price as Newcastle battle a bit of a fire sale and Arsenal are now pushing harder than ever to sign him.

Furthermore, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that it is indeed Mikel Arteta who is pushing hard behind the scenes to get Guimaraes signed.

“Behind the scenes Mikel Arteta is pushing like crazy to sign Guimaraes. Mikel Arteta wants him. Mikel Arteta considers Bruno a perfect player for Arsenal’s midfield and so work in progress on this one,” Romano explained on his podcast today.

However, while signing Guimaraes is all well and good, there’s also a bit of a repeat pattern emerging.

And in a nutshell, that should be worrying for both Martin Zubimendi and Arsenal supporters.

We all know that managers will sometimes do or say what is necessary in order to get a transfer deal over the line. It’s just how the game works, especially in such a competitive window.

However, there is a worry here that Arsenal and Arteta are repeating themselves.

Indeed, it was only last year that Romano revealed similar comments from Arteta about Zubimendi.

“Let me clarify, Zubimendi is not desperate to leave the club, but in case of super big clubs arriving he could leave the club. There is a release clause of €66m (£60m), that is the value of the release clause. From what I’m hearing, Mikel Arteta is still a big fan of Zubimendi, he believes that Zubimendi is a very talented midfielder and could be perfect for any club in the world,” Romano said.

Now, just 12 months on from Arsenal getting that deal done, it seems like Zubimendi is already on the chopping block and on his way to being replaced.

For Zubimendi, the sight of Guimaraes arriving at the club clearly sends a message that he has not fulfilled the potential that Arteta saw in him.

Of course, we are still talking about a World Cup winning midfielder here, so it’s not worth shutting the door on his Arsenal career just yet.

However, Zubimendi will need to prove himself again should Guimaraes arrive, while for Arteta, if the same happens next summer, then questions will have to start being asked of the Arsenal boss.
