Why Tottenham actually need to thank Arsenal for their £237m transfer splurge

There isn’t a lot for Arsenal fans to be jealous of when it comes to Tottenham right now but there’s no question their summer business so far is eye-catching.

While the Gunners have yet to make their move this summer, Tottenham have spent north of £230m by landing the likes of Sandro Tonali, Matheus Fernandes and Jan van Hecke.

Their spending is reportedly set to continue as well, with a number of other names being linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, while we can look on and half admire what Spurs are doing, we can also question if Arsenal might be partly responsible for this surge.

Could Folarin Balogun end up being Arsenal’s biggest transfer mistake in recent times?

Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze signing might have pushed Tottenham to the brink

Tottenham fans have been calling for transfer windows like this for some time now and even Arsenal fans will admit it’s been impressive so far.

However, they might also have Arsenal to thank as well.

Going back a year to the summer of 2025, we have to mention Arsenal’s signing of Eberechi Eze as a potential turning point for Spurs.

At one point last August, it looked like Spurs were set to win the race for Eze, with a deal more or less wrapped up.

However, it was Arsenal who nipped in with a £60m deal, convincing Eze that The Emirates was the best place for him.

In doing so, though, this might well have triggered something behind the scenes with Spurs.

It seems we are done with the days of Daniel Levy and his deliberating and delaying in terms of paying huge fees and big wages. Instead, we are seeing a Tottenham who seem to have finally had enough and they are making huge moves early.

Clearly, Robert De Zerbi’s appointment will have something to do with this.

But with Spurs falling further and further behind the rest of the big clubs in England, it’s clear that a deal like the one for Eze last summer has had an impact.

Quite where this stops for Spurs, remains to be seen. But right now, Arsenal fans will be looking on with a touch of jealousy.
