So Jack Wilshere has committed his long-term future to the club and signed a £50,000-a-week deal — on the same day that Wojciech Szczesny called a halt to new contract talks.
Wilshere has come on leaps and indeed bounds and if he continues to progress at this rate he will be worth every penny of his lucrative contract. It is refreshing that he has signed without any fuss in the light of the recent unsavory and tawdry events at the Mancs with, as Private Eye like to call him, ‘the hooker-loving, spud-faced nipper’ Rooney. Make a change from ‘Shrek’ I suppose.
But it was at about this stage of his career that Rooney demanded and got a move from his so-called boyhood idols Everton to Very Old Trafford. Wilshere has been at the Arsenal since he was nine but his family are all West Ham fans, although you can hardly imagine him yearning for a move to the Boleyn Ground or Upton Park or whatever they call their ground these days.
On Wilshere, AW says: ‘Jack is a fantastic footballer with huge potential, and we have all seen with his performances so far that he could be an extremely influential player at the top level. At still only 18 years of age, there is so much more to come from him and we’re all excited that Jack will be an Arsenal player for years to come.’
Talks about Szczesny’s future are apparently on ice. Seemingly he wants some sort of guarantee that he will get more games. AW will never be able to give that assurance. That said, after a very bright display against the Toon in the 4-0 win in the Carling Cup last week, it would make sense to sign him on a long deal. he is only 20 after all.
With MA1 out of the picture (injured or just unfancied – you decide) Fabianksi is first choice at present but we could see the day when the two young Poles fight it out for top spot. If he he stays. He might not be as loyal as the Boy Wonder Wilshere.
For the record he is quoted as saying: ‘There was some offers, but I am not interested right now. It’s not that I don’t want to extend the contract, I just don’t want to hold talks at this point. I have enough money to live and I can’t complain about that, but I will only be happy if I play. Everything depends on how many games I play. I admit that I want to play at Arsenal as long as they want me. If I can earn my place in goal I won’t even consider any other offers.’
