Arsenal new boy Albert Sambi Lokonga has named former Tottenham star Luka Modric as one of the players he really admired as a youngster.

The Belgian joined us from Anderlecht earlier this month and he is proving to be a really likeable character. His choice of words in his first interview were very good, and he has followed that up again.

Arsenal’s official website released the second part of Lokonga’s interview today. He was asked about the player he wanted to emulate as a kid, and the 21-year-old boldly claimed that he always wanted to be himself and nobody else.

However, he did mention five brilliant midfielders he learnt a few things from and former Spurs star Modric was one of them.

Albert Sambi Lokonga: I admired ex-Tottenham star Luka Modric

He said: “I never wanted to be like a player, I always wanted to be Sambi, so I took a little bit of all the players I used to watch. I never said to myself that you need to be like this player, I always wanted to be Sambi and to do Sambi on the pitch.

“If I had to tell you some players, I will say Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Modric, yeah, all the top players, Marco Veratti as well. All the top players.”

The Insider’s View:

As much as we want our players to stay as far away from anybody associated with Tottenham as possible, Modric is arguably the best player for Lokonga to learn from.

The Croatian, even though he played for Spurs, was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League when he was here. He left North London for Real Madrid back in 2012 and he has become one of the best in his position in the world.

Yes, Lokonga is not really similar to Modric, but there’s definitely parts of the Croatian’s game he can try to implement.

The Real Madrid man’s quality and composure on the ball, range of passing and ability to score from distance are among the best in the world, and we’d love nothing more than to see our new boy add those traits into his game in the coming years.
