Former Arsenal star Jack Wilshere sat down for an interview with The Athletic today and spoke about leaving the Emirates in the summer of 2018.

The Englishman was always a fan favourite at Arsenal. Ever since he broke into the side as a teenager to the time when he decided to leave the club, he was always loved, and he still is even to this day.

Injuries have been really cruel on Wilshere’s career. He was destined to become Arsenal and England’s captain, but recurring fitness issues have cost him a fantastic career at the top level.

Jack Wilshere: I regret leaving Arsenal in 2018

Wilshere’s Arsenal contract ended in the summer of 2018, right after Arsene Wenger left the club. The Englishman was offered a new deal by Unai Emery, one without the promise of regular game time. He turned that down and moved to West Ham.

Three years down the line, Wilshere admits that he made the wrong decision.

He said: “Honestly, I should have never left. That’s nothing against West Ham — it could have been anyone — but I shouldn’t have left Arsenal.

“I had a conversation with Arsene when I came back from Bournemouth. He said, ‘Look, you can leave. You’re not going to get a new contract here’. (But) Knowing Arsene the way I knew him and how much he rated me as a footballer, I knew if I got myself fit there were lots of games and I could get myself into that team.”

“I wish I had that same mentality when I sat down with Emery and he said, ‘Look, there’s a contract on the table but you’re not in my starting XI’. I remember walking out angry, because I thought I was going to play, I proved myself the year before.”

Speaking about leaving Arsenal, he said: “I probably made a few rash decisions, I rang my agent and said, ‘That’s it, we need to leave’. I should have taken a few days, calmed down and thought to myself again, ‘I look around this midfield and back myself to get in’.”

A fully fit Wilshere who’s at the top of his game can fit in at most clubs in the world. However, injuries ruined his career at Arsenal and his reputation of being someone who is prone to fitness problems is hurting his chances of finding a new club now.

Wilshere admitted in the interview that he has no offers from English clubs at the moment. That really is a shame as he’s one of the most talented footballers this country has ever produced. All we can do now is wish him the best and hope that he finds a new home very soon.
