Four days in football can really change everything, can’t it? Arsenal were down in the dumps when we woke up on Saturday but back to back wins against Chelsea and Brighton has brightened the mood around the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta’s side went into the tie today with a ton of confidence but we didn’t quite start the game that way. Both sides had a really poor first half, and if it wasn’t for Bernd Leno, we could well have been a goal down at the break.

Arsenal looked a lot better in the second half. We threatened their goal constantly and an opening goal was right around the corner. Arteta brought Alexandre Lacazette on and the Frenchman scored with his second touch of the game.

That was enough to pick up the three points and it’s all thanks to the former Lyon man. Arteta leaving him on the bench today was a shock to many, especially after his performance against Chelsea. However, the Arsenal boss has revealed that it was a forced change.

Arteta: Laca had a sore back

He said, as per Football London: “I think this is what all the managers dream for to bring people from the bench and win you the game like he’s (Lacazette) done tonight. I think he’s been in really good form in the last few weeks. He’s been scoring goals. He’s full of confidence.”

“Today he had a sore back, he could not start the game. But he came on and won the game for us which is massively important. We need big players and the senior players to step up in these difficult moments and he’s doing that for sure.”

Arteta was right to not risk Lacazette. The Frenchman was brilliant against Chelsea on Saturday and he was even better today. Bukayo Saka will receive a ton of praise for his excellent run and assist, but Laca’s movement to occupy some free space in the box was fantastic.

Lacazette’s form is excellent news for Arsenal but Arteta now has a huge selection headache. Aubameyang wasn’t great today and if form is anything to go by, our skipper doesn’t deserve a start at the moment.

It will be interesting to see the team news against West Brom this weekend. Nicolas Pepe didn’t feature tonight and Willian will also return to the squad. Lacazette has done enough to nail down a starting spot, as have Gabriel Martinelli and Saka.

That makes things difficult for Arteta, but this is the sort of headache that he would enjoy.
