Dean Jones claims that Arsenal have tried to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves, but the 24-year-old prefers a move to Manchester United instead.

The Gunners are on the lookout for a new central midfielder to replace Granit Xhaka. The Swiss international is expected to join Roma in the coming weeks, and we’ll need a top-quality player to come in and take his place.

Arsenal have been linked with plenty of names already, and Neves, labelled as a ‘fantastic player‘ by Nuno Espirito Santo, checks all the boxes. He is still young, excellent on the ball, Premier League proven and would suit Arteta’s system perfectly. However, it looks like he isn’t too keen to join us.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Ruben Neves prefers Manchester United over Arsenal

Jones said on The Football Terrace: “They (Arsenal) have definitely tried (to sign Neves). The player is not sure if that’s the right move for him at this stage.

“With Manchester United also in view for him, he’d rather wait things out and see if that comes to fruition. I think this is Arsenal’s big problem. They genuinely didn’t know who they could sign for the club at a time when they didn’t have European football.”

The Insider’s View:

Lack of European football was always going to be a problem, but rumours had convinced us that we’re still capable of securing big signings. However, if Jones is to be believed, Neves is not going to be one of them.

A deal for another midfield target, Manuel Locatelli, hasn’t seemed to have progressed either. The Italian prefers a move to Juventus over Arsenal, and although the Old Lady are yet to convince Sassuolo to let him leave, there is a feeling that he will end up in Turin very soon.

That certainly complicates things for Arsenal. Moves for two of Edu’s top targets are looking extremely unlikely now. That could force us to look elsewhere, and Yves Bissouma could well become our priority now.

It is clear that Arteta and Edu aren’t fully convinced by the Brighton man, but he’s a quality player. Many fans view him as the perfect midfielder to partner Thomas Partey in the middle of our park, some even think he’s better than Neves. He would be absolutely amazing for us, but only time will tell if we’ll actually make a move for him.
