Watford star Troy Deeney spoke on TalkSport today about Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and his turbulent form this season.
The former Dortmund star has been our main man ever since he joined us. He has almost always delivered for us, but he has had a really strange campaign this time around.
Auba hasn’t looked anything like his previous self this season. Up until the turn of the year, he had scored just three times in the league in 13 starts – that is almost unheard of for a player as consistent as him.
He is currently on 14 goals in all competitions this season, which isn’t a bad record, but everybody can see that there’s something just not right with him.
Troy Deeney thinks he knows the reason.
Deeney: Auba’s summer contract saga affected him
He said: “He wasn’t great yesterday and I think there was a moment just before he came off where Lacazette gave him the ball on the left. Normally, he’d have a touch and shot and he took one, two, three touches and got caught out.
“That’s when you know when someone’s not in their normal rhythm. Let’s be honest he’s a top finisher but normally it’s one-touch, shoot. Normally strikers have a favoured position and that’s his in the box and he’s going through one of those moments.
“He had a short pre-season and the contract stuff affected him.”
Arsenal Insider’s view:
Aubameyang’s contract saga was a long one and it did look at one point as though he would leave us.
Arsenal and Mikel Arteta went above and beyond to convince him to stay and they succeeded. The news was as good as a new signing, but nobody expected Auba to go through such a terrible run of form after that.
It really is hard to believe that his poor form is down to his new contract. However, Arteta and Auba himself need to turn things around as we need our main man to deliver to go all the way in the Europa League this season.
