Former Lille sporting director and one of football’s greatest scouts, Luis Campos, has heaped praise on Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi.

The Frenchman hasn’t played for Arsenal for over a year now and his time at the Emirates looks like it’s coming to an end. Mikel Arteta, being the disciplinarian he is, did not like Guendouzi’s antics and he has no interest in reintegrating him back into his squad.

As a result, it looks very likely that Guendouzi will leave Arsenal this summer. Multiple clubs have been linked with a move for the talented Frenchman, including Portuguese giants Benfica, who are on the lookout for a new central midfielder.

Luis Campos: I really like Matteo Guendouzi

Campos, one of Portugal’s greatest football minds, was asked about Benfica’s interest in Guendouzi and he heaped praise on the Arsenal man. He believes that the Frenchman is ‘an exceptional talent’ and has a ‘great future ahead of him’.

He told Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (June 23, page 18): “I like him a lot, he has great talent, an exceptional talent, he’s very good both technically and tactically.

“He was a player who showed up very young and whose first season in England went very well for him right away. The second one was not so good, it’s part of the players’ maturation and growth process.

“I have a feeling that emotionally he’s a player who hasn’t matured to 100 percent yet, he needs to mature more. By age, as he is still very young, he has a great future ahead of him.”

Should Arteta give Guendouzi another chance?

There is absolutely no doubt in anyone’s mind about Guendouzi’s talent. He is an incredible player for his age, and he has the potential to develop into one of the best midfielders in world football very soon.

However, his attitude could ruin everything for him. We all know how much of a disciplinarian Arteta is. The Arsenal boss didn’t even spare Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when he was late, so, Guendouzi never really stood a chance.

The relationship between the player and manager looks beyond repair now, and that’s a shame. It looks very likely that he will be sold in the coming weeks, and there’s a good chance that he will go on and be a real success at his new club.

However, there is still time for Arteta to reconsider. If Guendouzi goes up to the Arsenal boss and convinces him that he’s a changed man, he could well save his Gunners career. Fans would absolutely love that, but the chances of that happening are extremely slim.
