Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Aaron Ramsdale, but ex-Gunner Marc Overmars has offered us some fresh hope about signing Andre Onana this summer.

The Gunners need a new goalkeeper to compete with Bernd Leno for the number one spot. Ramsdale is a decent player, but most Arsenal fans are nowhere near convinced that he is good enough for us.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Arsenal have been linked with plenty of other goalkeepers over the last few months, most notably Ajax star Onana. The Cameroonian is arguably most Gooners’ preferred option this summer, but Lyon looked close to sealing a deal for him.

However, Overmars, who is now Ajax’s sporting director, doesn’t believe that a deal with Lyon is on the cards. He revealed that Arsenal haven’t contacted him either, but hinted that the race to sign the goalkeeper is wide open.

Overmars: Arsenal target Andre Onana to Lyon looks unlikely

The Dutchman told VI, as translated by Football London: “[I’m] not sure if we will get a deal with Lyon, there has not been [any] contact for a week.

“Another club were also interested, but they already have another goalkeeper. Arsenal were also mentioned, but I have not had any contact with them.”

Should Arsenal reconsider a move for Onana?

The only concern about signing Onana is that the Cameroonian is banned until the fourth of November. That means he is guaranteed to miss Arsenal’s first 10 league games if we sign him, which would be a big risk.

However, it is a risk that’s really worth taking.

Onana is a world-class player. He has already proved himself at the top level and his footwork is arguably better than every other goalkeeper we’ve been linked with.

The Ajax star will be available for an absolute bargain as well. Goal revealed last month that Arsenal can sign him for as little as £7 million, less than a fourth of what we’ll have to pay to sign Ramsdale from Sheffield United.

If there’s any chance for Arsenal to sign Onana this summer, we should be all over that deal.
