Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has claimed on Sky Sports that Mikel Arteta’s system would suit soon-to-be free-agent Sergio Aguero.

Manchester City announced earlier this week that the Argentine will be leaving the club at the end of his contract this summer. Aguero is undoubtedly a City legend and he is one of the best players to ever grace the Premier League.

Former Barcelona and City star Yaya Toure recently claimed on TalkSport that the Argentine ‘is up there with Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer and more’, and Aguero’s numbers over the last decade back that statement.

A number of top clubs will be keeping an eye on Aguero this summer. Injuries have been very cruel over the last year, but he is still an exceptional striker who will guarantee goals if a club can keep him fit.

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are reportedly among the clubs in the race to sign Aguero, but Merson believes that Arsenal would be the perfect club for him if he decides against leaving the Premier League.

He said: “Will he stay in England or will his next move be abroad? If he stays in England, I think Arsenal would suit the style he would be looking for.

“They’d be a good choice. Mikel Arteta was at Manchester City and the way Arsenal play; they get around the box and they do create a lot of opportunities. Arsenal do tick that box for Aguero.”

The Insider’s View:

Five years ago, if an opportunity to sign a player like Aguero for free presented itself, Arsenal fans would have loved nothing more than to get him – irrespective of the wages he would’ve demanded then.

The Argentine’s salary is still humongous. His terrible injury record and the fact that he will soon turn 33 makes it an even riskier move for Arsenal or any other club in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Arteta’s style of play would certain suit a player like Aguero, but this deal is never going to happen.
