Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Redknapp has a harsh message to deliver to Arsenal fans after Manchester City sealed a 1-0 win at the Emirates on Sunday.
The Gunners started terribly and conceded before two minutes. Little Raheem Sterling leaped above Rob Holding to head the ball past Bernd Leno, and it just looked like one of those days.
Arsenal weathered the storm and got on the front foot. We took the game to Manchester City in the last 25 minutes of the first half, but we lacked the final ball, and that cost us the game.
City saw the game out and that’s now 11 defeats for us in the Premier League this season. A number of senior players haven’t stepped up and Redknapp tells Arsenal fans that one of our biggest stars is ‘past his best’ after his performance on Sunday.
He said: “Aubameyang is past his best. He’s going to have moments; he’s going to get hat-tricks. But when I watch him sometimes, it’s like he’s lost his superpower.
“I saw him run past people when he first came to the Premier League. I saw him run past people at Dortmund. Now I’m seeing a player who looks like he’s going to get bullied. He’s your leading light, but the likes of [Bukayo] Saka and [Emile] Smith Rowe, they’re the ones leading the way.”
Arsenal Insider’s view
That’s slightly harsh but Auba hasn’t looked anything like his usual self this season. He looks lost at times and the player who won multiple games on his own for us last season is just not there anymore.
His hat-trick against Leeds United made many of us believe that he is back to his best. However, his display against Benfica was probably his worst in an Arsenal shirt, and his performance yesterday wasn’t great either – even though he barely had any service.
Saying he’s past his best might just be a bit of stretch but it is really worrying. There’s something that’s just not right with Auba, and hopefully, him and Arteta can find a solution to that problem before it’s too late.
