Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s held his press conference today ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup third-round clash against Newcastle United.
Arsenal are working hard to get deals done in the transfer market. Gunners fans are desperate to see new faces to solve our creativity issues. However, that isn’t going to be our first signing of the window.
Multiple reports have claimed recently that Arsenal will sign Omar Rekik from Hertha Berlin this month. Per Mertesacker reportedly played a key part in transfer negotiations and the deal is expected to cost us a fee in the region of £540,000 (Read more)
Football London journalist Chris Wheatley shared a picture of Rekik in training with Arsenal’s under-23 squad. Arteta was quizzed about his arrival and the Gunners boss admitted that we have been following him for quite some time.
Arteta: Rekik has a really bright future
He said, as per Arsenal.com: “We will announce it when we possibly can, he is a young talent that we have been following for a while that has a really bright future, but we will give more details when we can.”
Arteta was tight lipped but it looked pretty clear that a deal was very close to a completion. Rekik will join the under-23’s and if he impresses there, a first-team opportunity should come his way very soon.
David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis will all be out of contracts in the summer. The latter two could even leave this month, which should give Rekik the incentive he needs to work hard over the next six months.
Mertesacker reportedly pushed for the deal to happen. The German has clearly seen something in Rekik, and hopefully, the 19-year-old can follow the BFG’s footsteps to the very top.
