Edu Gaspar has revealed what he told Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta before completing the £30 million signing of Porto star Fabio Vieira this week.
The 22-year-old officially joined the Gunners yesterday, and he really is an exciting find. The Portuguese midfielder can play on the wing, as a false-nine, in attacking midfield and also as a number eight.
A player as versatile as Vieira is perfect for Arteta’s Arsenal, and we sure are glad Edu managed to strike a deal with Porto to bring him in this summer.
What Edu told Mikel Arteta before Arsenal signed Fabio Vieira
After Arsenal announced the signing of Vieira yesterday, Edu sat down for an interview with the club’s official website.
Our technical director said about Vieira’s style of play: “Fabio is the one who probably we don’t have anyone in the squad with his characteristics.
“Maybe Martin Odegaard has his quality, Smith Rowe has the same quality, but he (Vieira) has something very special because he likes to play very close to the final third. He likes to play in the pocket, he feels comfortable to be in that position.”
Edu then added: “As I said to Mikel, it’s very difficult to find a player like him (Vieira) because of the way he plays and the way he feels comfortable on the field.
“So, it’s very difficult and very challenging position. I think we will enjoy a lot seeing Fabio playing for us.”
It is no secret that Arteta’s eventual aim is to transition his system into a 4-3-3. We haven’t quite had the players to do that until now, but with Vieira, we may be able to pull it off next season.
Edu’s right, it’s not easy at all to find a player as talented and versatile as Vieira, but we’ve got him in now, and we can’t wait to see how he fares in an Arsenal shirt.
Vieira will take part in Arsenal’s pre-season tour next month.
