'Why have Arsenal not': Merson shocked Edu didn't sign £25m striker

Ex-Gunner Paul Merson has had a go at Arsenal for not even trying to sign Danny Ings before he joined Aston Villa from Southampton.

Mikel Arteta’s men are yet to score a goal in the Premier League this season. A lot of it has been down to the lack of chances created, but our strikers haven’t done enough in the three games so far.

Many Arsenal fans were hoping for a new forward in the summer window. Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah looked like they would leave at one point and that would’ve made a new number nine a priority for us. However, they stayed and we decided against signing a new player there.

Merson: Why have Arsenal not signed Danny Ings?

Merson, like many others, is not a fan of Arsenal’s current recruitment strategy. It seems like he wanted the Gunners to sign a new striker and the fact that we didn’t even try to sign Ings seems have shocked him.

He said on Sky Sports News (10:10 pm, Transfer deadline day): “Look at Everton with Rafa now, they’re going to be hard to beat, West Ham look decent, it’s not as easy as it used to be, it’s not a free ride anymore where you go, top four, five or six.

“You look at Aston Villa, they’ve got Danny Ings, why have Arsenal not got Danny Ings? Why are they not buying Danny Ings? I worry about the recruitment, I worry about that!”

The Insider’s View:

Aston Villa managed to shock the football world by signing Ings for £25 million without making any noise. (Sky) They’ve snapped up a proven goalscorer in the prime of his career, and they deserve immense credit for that.

Arsenal could’ve done with a proven goalscorer too. Ings is certainly a name we could’ve considered, but the Gunners’ transfer strategy this summer was to sign players under the age of 24 only.

That meant Ings wouldn’t even be an option for us this summer, but the fact that we didn’t sign any other striker either is a bit frustrating.
