Arsenal are already preparing for next summer’s transfer window, and Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez seems to be high on their list of priorities.
Last summer, Andrea Berta brought Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal in a deal worth around £63 million, but that move has not quite gone to plan.
If you’re Andrea Berta and Julian Alvarez is offered to you for £87m, would you sign him?
Too much money or a big bargain?
The North London club spent most of the summer mulling over their options before eventually opting for the Swede.
The Gunners’ hunt for a lethal number nine continues, and next summer, the Italian director looks set to target another option.
Julian Alvarez is ‘very, very high’ on Arsenal’s list
Atletico Madrid attacker Julian Alvarez is ‘very, very high on Arsenal’s list’ of summer transfer targets, according to James Olley.
Henry urged Arsenal to sign Alvarez, but they did not listen; however, next summer could be different, with the Gunners set to return for the Argentine.
Olley told ESPN FC: “From what I was told, Alvarez is very, very high on their list. I think he ends all doubt about whether they have a top-class centre-forward to finish off that team.
“He can do everything. We talk about Gyokeres, Jesus, Havertz and Merino, who is obviously now injured, being horses for courses, and they can fit different styles, different systems, whatever. You just think Alvarez can do it all. Got that pedigree at the highest level.”
Fill in the blank: Viktor Gyokeres is now worth £___m following his start to life at Arsenal…
Arsenal paid £63m in the summer…
Berta could be key to bringing the 26-year-old to the Emirates Stadium, having paid £81m to sign him at Atletico.
“Andrea Berta, the sporting director, could be the ace up Arsenal’s sleeve because he has worked at Atletico for so many years.
“He actually did the deal that brought Alvarez to Atletico Madrid, and he remains close with the player’s camp.”
Julian Alvarez compared to Viktor Gyokeres
Despite Gyokeres’ struggles, the 27-year-old is still level on goals for the season with the Atletico forward.
The pair are tied on 11 goals; meanwhile, Alvarez leads in assists with five, which is three more than Gyokeres’ two.
When the pair went head-to-head at the Emirates back in October, Gyokeres came out on top with a brace against Diego Simeone’s team.
