Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi were run into the ground last season, and finding a suitable backup option will be key.

Myles Lewis-Skelly has also emerged as another option in midfield for Arsenal following his very strong end to the season, alongside Rice.

But the North London club are working hard to build on their Premier League-winning squad, and Tonali is among the names being assessed.

Arsenal make calls to sign Sandro Tonali

Arsenal have made calls to sign Sandro Tonali over ‘recent days’, with several clubs in the race for the Newcastle United star, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Arsenal attempted to sign Tonali back in January and have already made moves to bring him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

However, Manchester United are also in the race, and several clubs are also expected to join them over the coming weeks.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “Man United, who are still monitoring the situation and Sandro Tonali could be an option for more clubs.

“Arsenal made some calls over the recent days for Tonali. So also Arsenal are in the mix. There could be more clubs joining the race for Tonali.

“Remember, there could be more clubs. So the situation around Sandro Tonali could become interesting.”

But the Gunners seem intent on getting to the front of the queue for the Italian midfielder, having already made contact to sign him.

Arteta seems to like signing players with Premier League experience, and Tonali certainly fits that bill, having been one of the league’s best midfielders over recent seasons.

Newcastle set Sandro Tonali asking price

One major stumbling block clubs keen on the midfielder could face is Newcastle’s asking price for him.

Newcastle value Tonali at £100 million, according to The Telegraph, which would price most clubs out of a deal for the Italian international.

The Gunners paid £100 million for Rice back in the summer of 2023 and would unlikley want to match that for Tonali.
