Arsenal wonderkid Charlie Patino was once the biggest talent in the Hale End Academy, but the last two years have been a struggle.

Patino was the name on every Arsenal fan’s lips as he came on as a substitute against Sunderland in the 2021-22 Carabao Cup quarter-final for his senior debut, and scored just a few minutes later in a 5-1 win.

The midfielder went on loan to Championship side Blackpool the following year, and impressed in 37 appearances, scoring three and assisting four times.

Patino then went on loan again to Swansea last season, but lost his starting spot in the final weeks of the season, but still managed 35 appearances overall.

However, with one year left on his deal, Patino found himself at a crossroads this summer, and was excluded from Arsenal’s pre-season tour in the USA, but he has now found himself a transfer move.

Arsenal agree Charlie Patino sale to Deportivo La Coruna

Journalist Ryan Taylor has now revealed that Arsenal have agreed to sell Patino to Spanish Second Division side Deportivo La Coruna.

“Arsenal agree permanent sale of talented 20-year-old midfielder Charlie Patino to Deportivo La Corona. Fee said to be in region of £1m. Understand deal includes significant sell-on clause for Gunners,” he posted on X.

Patino’s exit does not come as a surprise, but his destination does. Patino does have a Spanish passport, and he will now be linking up with a player Arsene Wenger once signed at Arsenal.

Charlie Patino will join Lucas Perez at Deportivo La Coruna

In the summer of 2016, Wenger sprung a surprise when he signed Spanish striker Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna for around £17m.

Perez showed flashes of quality, which saw him score a stunning volley in a 3-3 draw with Bournemouth, but he was hardly given a chance before he departed permanently two years later.

After spells at West Ham, Deportivo Alaves, Elche and Cadiz, Perez made a shock move when he returned to Deportivo La Coruna for a fourth spell at the club, paying his own transfer fee, and helped them return to the Segunda Division after four years in the third tier.

Now 35, Perez has established himself as a legend at the club, and Patino will have a fellow former Gunner for company as the 20-year-old embarks on a fresh start in Spain.
