David Ornstein’s latest update has sent Arsenal fans into a frenzy on social media.

As per The Athletic, Arsenal are exploring an audacious move to sign Vinicius Jr from Real Madrid.

The Brazilian superstar is into the final 12 months of his contract at the Bernabeu with no breakthrough in renewal negotiations.

Real Madrid will not want to lose him for free, obviously, and Arsenal, along with other clubs, are monitoring the situation closely.

The Athletic are clear that this is at an early stage. There have been no club-to-club talks. There is no guarantee it materialises.

But crucially, Mikel Arteta, Andrea Berta and Josh Kroenke are all on board with it.

And it doesn’t seem to be any sort of agent fishing for interest. It sounds like Arsenal, internally, are seriously considering whether they can sign one of the very best players on the planet.

Vinicius scored four goals in Brazil’s World Cup campaign before their elimination by Martin Odegaard’s Norway in the round of 16.

Last season he registered 22 goals across all competitions for Real Madrid, who finished second in La Liga, eight points behind Barcelona, and ended the campaign empty-handed for a second consecutive year.

Since joining Madrid from Flamengo in 2018, he has made 375 appearances, scoring 128 goals and providing 100 assists. He is, by any measure, a generational talent.

We wrote earlier this summer about how Arsenal could sign Vinicius and how it could set them up to dominate the Premier League for years to come.

It could even simultaneously give Real Madrid the funds to sign their dream centre forward, Erling Haaland, from direct rivals Manchester City.

At the time it felt like fantasy. Ornstein just made it feel like it could actually happen.

Arsenal have never signed a player of this calibre or at this price. It would dwarf every transfer in their history.

If Andrea Berta can get this done, it would simply be a statement of intent unlike anything this club has ever made.
