Eddie Nketiah’s proposed transfer from Arsenal to Marseille has now hit a stumbling block in negotiations.

Arsenal are open to letting Eddie Nketiah depart the Emirates Stadium this summer.

The striker fell down the pecking order last season, reduced to a bit-part role in the second half of the campaign as Kai Havertz established himself as the Gunners’ first choice at the top end of the pitch.

Marseille have shown an interest in signing Nketiah, and the opportunity to move to Ligue 1, following in the footsteps of fellow former Hale End ace Folarin Balogun, seems to appeal to the 25-year-old.

At this stage in his career the once-capped England international needs to be playing regular football. He clearly isn’t going to be granted the game time he needs by Mikel Arteta, and the Gunners could use the funds that they may raise through his sale.

However, agreeing terms with Marseille has proved an issue so far.

Arsenal set Eddie Nketiah price tag in Marseille talks

According to journalist Chris Wheatley, reporting on Instagram: “Marseille in advanced negotiations to sign Eddie Nketiah. Arsenal want €30m [£25m] with obligation to buy, while the French side offer loan with €20m [£17m] buy option. Positive talks continue with resolution expected soon.”

Whilst it is clear that the two clubs have agreed on structuring the deal as an initial loan, there is a sticking point when it comes to the purchase price and commitment to do so.

Putting aside the obvious difference in the two fees that the clubs have put on the table, Arsenal are keen for the French outfit to commit to buying Nketiah next summer now. Meanwhile, Marseille are fighting to reserve the right to send the striker back to Arsenal should he fail to impress over the course of his loan.

However, it is also noted that Arsenal and Marseille are expected to come to an agreement, with Nketiah likely to be on the move.

What Arsenal must do in transfer window if Nketiah leaves

The departure of the attacker could leave the Gunners light on options to lead the line, especially if the fitness issues that have plagued Gabriel Jesus in recent seasons persist.

Arsenal have already missed out on signing Benjamin Sesko this summer, and need to make the acquisition of a striker a top priority.
