Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer, with Chelsea also in contention for the forward.

The England international is expected to leave the Bees at the end of this season with Brentford manager Thomas Frank recently admitting that Toney will depart the west London side in the summer.

Arsenal have been strongly linked with a move for Toney in recent weeks as the Gunners failed to launch a bid to sign the £100m-rated attacker, with Mikel Arteta keen to bring in a new leading forward.

And according to the Mirror, Arsenal are now leading the race to sign Toney, with Chelsea also a potential destination for the 27-year-old Premier League hitman.

Described by Declan Rice as a striker who is ‘like Harry Kane’, Toney would be an interesting addition to Arsenal’s squad and a potential upgrade on Gabriel Jesus in the striker role.

However, given the England international’s age and unique playing style, there’s every chance that Toney might not be too suited to playing under Arteta, who clearly has a specific forward in mind.

Any club spending over £100m on a player nowadays has to be sure that the investment their making is near-enough 100% going to be beneficial for the team and works with plans for the future.

Arsenal showed last summer to be one of the few clubs in the history of football to make such a deal worth it in the form of Rice, who everyone has to have forgotten cost over £100m, such is the midfielder’s brilliance.

Yet for Toney, the situation will be a different one for the Gunners, with the attacker not quite exactly what Arsenal should be looking for the in the summer transfer window.

Indeed, there’s no denying that Toney is brilliant and borderline world-class, but for what Arsenal want, the England international might not be worth the risk for what Arteta is looking for.
