Arsenal are going to be in the market for a midfielder after the injury to Thomas Partey, and have reportedly made Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz the top target.

Arsenal have struggled this season with various injuries leading to some disappointing results for Mikel Arteta‘s side.

Thomas Partey is the latest player to be sidelined which has resulted in his heir being looked into.

Arsenal have therefore looked at Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz as a potential option, with Fabrizio Romano claiming he is the favourite option for the Gunners.

But he wont be an easy signing to complete, with a high fee expected and Aston Villa themselves probably desperate to keep him.

Romano gives transfer update

Reporting on Thursday night, Romano revealed that Arsenal will be looking to sign a midfielder in Janaury.

“Arsenal are gonna look again into the midfielders market in January after Thomas injury.

“Understand Douglas Luiz remains the fav option in #AFC list since long time, Arsenal love him but ambitious #AVFC want to keep Douglas. Not easy.”

He explained that Arsenal’s favourite option is Luiz who has been on their shortlist for a long time. The Brazil international has been described recently as one of the Premier League’s ‘highlights’.

He will be a difficult player to sign though as Villa are in the midst of an ambitious revolution which sees them challenging the top four.

Romano admitted a deal won’t be easy which is fair given a January move would definitely be ruled out by Emery.

What would Douglas Luiz bring to Arsenal?

Luiz would be an upgrade on Partey for starters, and a player in his prime years who has recently hit the big time at Villa.

A true box-to-box player, Luiz has six goals and two assists this season so far according to BBC Sport.

His on-ball talent would be a perfect match with Declan Rice and no doubt would become the leagues best pairing in midfield.

He has a current market value of £52 million but that would likely be far higher in Janaury.
