Arsenal’s pre-season work is underway at London Colney.

Mikel Arteta has been welcoming back the squad this week, having already taken a group to Marbella for an early pre-pre-season camp.

Players not involved at the World Cup have returned, with Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, Gabriel Jesus, Cristhian Mosquera and Myles Lewis-Skelly among those back.

Christos Tzolis, having officially joined Arsenal this week, is also expected to join the group imminently.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal and Hamburger SV remain in direct contact over a permanent transfer for Vieira, with ‘concrete figures’ now having been exchanged between the clubs

Vieira wants the move too. Plettenberg says the Portuguese midfielder loves Hamburg, loves the city, and loves working under HSV coach Merlin Polzin.

Arsenal are holding out for a fee seemingly out of Hamburg’s reach but both clubs are now said to be working on a resolution.

Plettenberg also clarifies that HSV’s other summer signings have been made independently of the Vieira situation, meaning the German club are not waiting on his arrival before completing their own business.

Vieira spent last season on loan at HSV, where he clearly impressed enough for the Bundesliga side to want to make a move permanent.

Arsenal bought him from Porto in 2022 for around £34million, but he never nailed down a regular first-team role under Arteta, making just 33 Premier League appearances.

Getting Vieira’s wages off the books and raising funds for incoming business is an important piece of housekeeping.
