Arsenal now ‘closely watching’ 18-cap talent, could be signed for bargain price

Arsenal may be looking to sign a winger in the January transfer window, and Sporting Club De Portugal star Geny Catamo has now emerged as a target.

Mikel Arteta is seemingly keen on adding depth and competition for Bukayo Saka, and had targeted Pedro Neto of Wolves, but he picked up an injury which looks set to rule him out of any mid-season move.

It seems that Arteta wants to add another pacey option on the right wing to allow Saka to be rotated more, amidst concerns over his heavy workload.

Arsenal are now watching Geny Catamo

A report from Football Transfers has now claimed that Arsenal are “closely watching” Catamo, who has 18 caps for the Mozambique National side.

Catamo only broke into the Sporting first team in this campaign and has two goals and two assists in 13 appearances for the Portuguese giants, who knocked Arsenal out of the Europa League last season.

The 22-year-old has just 36 senior appearances across his career for three clubs, and started in just two of his nine league appearances this season.

His contract expires in 2025, meaning that Arsenal could pick him up for a low fee if they are keen on bringing him in.

Catamo is not what Arsenal need right now

Catamo may be someone Arsenal monitor as he continues his breakthrough at Sporting, but it would be a major surprise to see Mikel Arteta sign him in the January window.

If Arsenal do sign a winger, it would likely be someone who can give Saka genuine competition and reliable depth. Catamo would be too much of an unknown quantity.

Arsenal also have youngster Amario Cozier-Duberry in their ranks, and signing another raw talent in his position could jeopardise his chances of first-team action.

Marquinhos is also out on loan as a young promising winger, and it seems unlikely that another player of a similar profile with a low level of experience would be targeted in the Winter window.
