Arsenal are continuing to strengthen the talent pool in the Hale End Academy, and have now announced a new signing.
With Arsenal’s goalkeeping roster at youth and senior level currently facing uncertainty over several options, a signing has been made in the position.
Youth goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has departed after a successful loan spell at Wrexham, whilst Karl Hein recently put pen to paper on a new deal at the club, but could still leave on loan.
With Aaron Ramsdale also set to leave, a new number two is being targeted, with Espanyol’s Joan Garcia freshly linked, but another potential future star has arrived.
Arsenal have now announced that Danish goalkeeper Lucas Nygaard has joined the academy, and it is clear to see why they have targeted this teenager specifically.
Arsenal announce signing of youth goalkeeper Lucas Nygaard
Arsenal have confirmed Nygaard’s arrival on a free transfer via the Arsenal website, and the former FC Nordsjaelland product has now explained why he chose to move to the Emirates.
“I’m really pleased to finally be here. I have a good feeling in my stomach,” he stated.
“As you all know, Arsenal is a big football club and I was really happy when my dad told me there was some interest and I was going here on a trial.”
Lucas Nygaard suits Arsenal’s desired goalkeeping style

In recent years at senior level, Bernd Leno and Aaron Ramsdale have been discarded by Arteta as he sought out a goalkeeper who was strong at playing out from the back.
The Arsenal academy are aiming to replicate the style of the senior team with their youth products, and this includes targeting ball-playing goalkeepers such as Nygaard.
“I’m a modern goalkeeper who likes to play with my feet. I’m also good on the line, making great saves,” he added.
“I played for FC Nordsjaelland who also like the goalkeeper to play a lot, so they did a great job developing me.
“I’m looking forward to playing games again and winning a lot of games next season while developing.
“I’ve chosen Arsenal because I could see they like to play out from the back and that feels really good. The people around the club have been really great, so it wasn’t a hard decision.”
Nygaard and Arsenal appear to both be delighted that he has joined, with the goalkeeper ready to continue his development in a team which suits his style.
The teenager has made two appearances for the Denmark under-18 side, and eight for the under-17s. He will join the roster of goalkeepers in the academy ahead of next season, and will hope to feature more, possibly for Jack Wilshere’s under-18 side.
