Arsenal have now made an enquiry for Brighton Hove Albion’s 25-year-old Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

That’s according to 90min who report that Sanchez is seen as an alternative to David Raya, Arsenal’s first choice.

The news will surely come as a surprise to Arsenal fans who probably believed that a reported move for Raya was a signing purely born out of opportunity.

Why Pele Is Overrated.

Raya only has one year left on his Brentford contract and is actively seeking a move ahead of the new season.

And given Arsenal have held long-term interest in the player, the move made a lot of sense.

However, with Matt Turner likely to leave if Raya arrives, Arsenal fans will question the merits of Sanchez also displacing Turner.

Sanchez was of course dropped by Brighton last season in favour of Jason Steele, who Roberto De Zerbi preferred for his passing ability.

Therefore to part ways with Matt Turner, a goalkeeper who has barely put a glove wrong at Arsenal, wouldn’t make a lot of sense.

Arsenal have made an enquiry for Brighton’s Sanchez

Arsenal fans may be worried that a deal for Brighton’s Sanchez could actually worsen their keeping department.

It’s not unrealistic to suggest that Matt Turner may have been a starting goalkeeper for Brighton last season given his attributes.

And it would then of course beg the question if he’s an upgrade on Turner at all – a keeper brought to the club by Mikel Arteta.

Moreover, fans may also question the logic in parting with a fee that could be better spent elsewhere in the squad.

‘Amazing’ Sanchez is believed to have a price tag of around £20m, a fee Arsenal would be unlikely to redeem for Matt Turner if sold.

And with Arsenal potentially still looking to bring in a winger, just look at the links to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, it does seem this may not be the best move.

Of course, Arsenal fans will be hoping a move for Brighton’s Sanchez is not required if they are successful in attempts to sign Raya.

But they may be hoping they weren’t seeking a goalkeeper at all.
