Arsenal’s recruitment team are hard at work ahead of the January transfer window.

There is a good chance that the Gunners will not sign anyone after bringing in eight new players in the summer, but one or two incomings will definitely help.

Arsenal could do with a new defender because of all their injury issues at the back, while a midfield addition could also help because of their lack of cover for Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi.

The Premier League leaders have now been linked with a player they played against recently – Aleksandar Stankovic.

Arsenal want to sign Club Brugge star Aleksandar Stankovic

Arsenal have been fantastic in the Champions League this season.

The Gunners are on top of the table after winning every single game in the competition so far, the most recent of which was against Club Brugge.

Mikel Arteta’s men won the game 3-0 thanks to a brace from Noni Madueke and another stunner from Gabriel Martinelli.

The North Londoners deservedly won the game, but Brugge caused them a few problems. Stankovic in midfield impressed.

La Interista now claim that Arsenal are following the 20-year-old midfielder with ‘great interest’. It has been revealed that the English leaders like his profile and potential and see the benefit in signing him.

But there is a problem.

Club Brugge signed Stankovic from Inter Milan, and the Italian club inserted a buy-back clause in the deal. That can be triggered in the summer of 2026.

The report claims that Inter intend to use that option next summer, which means that he is likely to go back to Italy instead of joining Arsenal.

Aleksandar Stankovic’s stats vs Arsenal explain why Mikel Arteta wants to sign him

It’s not often that weaker teams get chances to score against Arsenal.

The Gunners absolutely dominate sides in all phases of the game, and there have been fixtures this season where opponents have failed to even register a shot.

Club Brugge, however, played well, and Stankovic impressed as Arteta watched live from the touchline.

In his 90 minutes on the pitch, the Italy-born Serbian had 67 touches of the ball and completed 46 of his 52 attempted passes, thus maintaining a healthy 86 per cent passing accuracy.

Stankovic also created two chances against Arsenal, had six shots at goal and missed a big chance to score a goal. Defensively, the 20-year-old made six ball recoveries, two interceptions and a clearance. (Sofascore)

That is perhaps one of the reasons why Arteta and Arsenal are interested in signing him.
