Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi’s father, who is also his agent, has addressed the rumours surrounding his son’s future.

Football London claimed yesterday that Mustafi wants to follow Mesut Ozil and Sokratis Papastathopoulos out of Arsenal by terminating his contract.

The German international, like his two former teammates, has less than six month left on his contract. He hasn’t played since Boxing Day and it is clear that he has no future at the club.

The report claimed that Mustafi’s representatives are in talks with Arsenal to terminate his contract this month. However, his father has rubbished those rumours and revealed that he will only leave once his contract ends in the summer.

He told Transfermarkt: “I also read the rumours yesterday that Shkodran is set to terminate his contract. To clarify: there are currently no talks about a contract termination. The fact is that Shkodran will leave the club in the summer at the latest.”

That’s that then. Mustafi will remain an Arsenal player until the end of the season and he will leave us a free-agent in June.

Arsenal Insider’s view:

Just one minute of football since our Boxing Day game against Chelsea shows that Mustafi will not be used unless Arteta has no choice.

The German international is behind Gabriel Magalhaes, Rob Holding, David Luiz and Pablo Mari in the pecking order. Even Calum Chambers might jump ahead of him when he is back to his best, which makes things difficult for him.

However, it makes more sense for Mustafi to stay put. Staying will get him all of his salary until the summer and as a free-agent then, he can demand more money from interested sides than he would get otherwise.
