Arsenal have been linked with a number of strikers in recent days, but there has now been a development which means they should change their targets.

Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins have both reportedly been targeted by Mikel Arteta for January moves, and both players would arrive with a number of red flags.

The future of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is now uncertain, after a fallout with his club, and if he is to become available within the next two transfer windows, he is the striker that Arsenal should focus on.

The 24-year-old scored 31 times in 39 games last season, helping Napoli win their first Serie A title since the days of Diego Maradona, and is currently one of the best strikers in the world.

He was linked with a number of moves over the summer, with an expected price tag of £150m, but recent developments, as well as his contract situation, means that there may be a chance this price drops.

Do Arsenal need a striker?

Arsenal have enough numbers in attack with Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard, but if they can find a way to upgrade their goalscoring options, they may take it.

The likes of Toney and Watkins would not upgrade the squad, but Osimhen would. The Nigerian could be a level-raising signing for Arsenal to help close the gap on Manchester City and Erling Haaland, and he could be the clinical goalscorer Mikel Arteta desires.

It remains to be seen how his situation develops, but Fabrizio Romano has claimed that he is “furious” at his club, and Arsenal should keep an eye on this.

It may even be worth abandoning any potential pursuit of Toney in case Osimhen does suddenly become available for a move, and missing out on a player of his talent will be frustrating if a transfer does become a possibility.
