Arsenal to launch bid for ‘monster’ midfielder ‘this month’, it’s not Douglas Luiz

A midfield overhaul is surely on the horizon for Arsenal in this transfer window or in the summer.

Although Declan Rice has been unbelievable since arriving from West Ham United, Mikel Arteta still needs someone to play alongside him in Arsenal’s midfield.

One player who the Gunners are looking to replace is Thomas Partey. The Ghanian, who turns 31 this year, has suffered long-term injury troubles and isn’t a reliable figure for Arteta to call upon.

Meanwhile, Jorginho’s contract situation remains up in the air and Mohamed Elneny isn’t of the required standard to be plying his trade in a title-chasing team.

With fresh blood needed in the engine room, Arsenal have been linked with Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz, who Arteta labelled as his “dream signing” and Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The latest target to pop up on the Gunner’s radar, however, is Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Arsenal want to bring Amadou Onana in ‘this month’

As reported by TEAMtalk, Arsenal have made an approach to sign Onana in the January transfer window.

The Belgian made the £33m switch from Lille in the summer of 2022 and has established himself as a key player in Everton’s side.

After putting in several impressive performances for Everton, the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United have considered making an offer in the past.

However, the report states that Arsenal are keen to beat off the competition and want to bring him in ‘this month’.

With Everton reluctant to let him go in the middle of the season, the Toffees are set to command a huge fee for the 22-year-old which could be in the region of £70m.

Given the Gunners have limitations when it comes to spending, it remains to be seen whether a deal can be struck this month.

Should Arsenal sign Amadou Onana?

Arsenal are in desperate need of a midfield refresh and Onana possess the strength, power and athleticism to form an excellent partnership next to Rice.

Arteta requires his midfielders to be exceptional at carrying the ball long distances, pressing machines to win possession back and to be good in tight areas.

Whilst Onana ticks all of those boxes, he does need to improve with his decision making and his passing can be wayward at times.

If he did sign for Arsenal, however, he would provide Arteta with a new dimension to his midfield contingent while providing a youthful alternative to Jorginho, Elneny and Jorginho.

After being lauded as a “monster” by writer Raj Chohan, Onana does possess monstrous physical attributes, but it’s just a question of whether he can refine the technical side of his game.
