Arsenal told £86m target would be a better signing than Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen

Arsenal have been linked with several strikers ahead of the summer transfer window, but all of their targets have their negatives.

There are a number of high-profile, big-money attackers that Mikel Arteta may look to secure including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting Club De Portugal.

Osimhen could come at a very high price, with his release clause estimated to be over £110m, and given his poor injury record, this could end up being too high a risk for Arteta and Edu Gaspar.

Toney would arrive as a Premier League proven option, but there are question marks over his attitude, and at 28, he would not be a long-term addition.

Gyokeres has been outstanding in Portugal this season, but is the least proven of the three players, raising question marks about which player Arsenal should target as a priority.

Arsenal told Viktor Gyokeres would be ideal striker signing

Speaking on The Gooner Talk Podcast, journalist Tom Canton claimed that the Swedish forward would be his first choice striker target over Osimhen or Toney.

“I think that Arsenal should aim to land a cold finisher, but a cold finisher that is also collaborative and can hold the ball up and can play the rougher game,” he stated.

“I like Viktor Gyokeres a lot because I think he’s got a lot of the traits that I’d like in an Arsenal striker to take us to that next level.

“He’s my pick, he’s the one that I’d go for at the moment. If I was to choose any striker on the market it would be him.”

Gyokeres has a reported release clause of around £86m, meaning he too, would not be cheap, but it is unclear yet whether Sporting would be willing to negotiate over a fee in the summer.

The 25-year-old would certainly be a better long-term option than Toney given his age, and he is in the best form of the trio.

With 30 goals and 11 assists in 33 games across all competitions, he has the most goal contributions of any player in any European league this season, and he would add a lot of height and physicality to the side.

Gyokeres was outstanding in the English Championship with Coventry City last season, and whilst a risk does remain over whether he can adapt to Arsenal’s style at the top level, it is clear that he is capable of scoring at a high rate, and should he settle quickly in the Premier League, he could indeed be the best option available to the Gunners this summer.
