Arsenal have reportedly shown interest in Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo in the January transfer window and he’s now been compared to legendary forward Sergio Aguero.

It was announced last month that Arsenal were gifted a boost in their pursuit of Leonardo.

His agent recently revealed that he is set to move to Europe in the winter window, with a price tag of around £20m.

The 20-year-old outlined his ambitions of wanting to earn enough recognition to join the Brazilian National Team and the Gunners can provide him with the necessary conditions to achieve that aim.

Despite his age, Leonardo has risen to prominence as a clinical goalscorer for club and country.

In 49 appearances for Santos in 2023, Leonardo netted an impressive 21 goals and in the U20 World Cup, the wonderkid scored five times in as many matches to help Brazil reach the quarter-finals, where they were knocked out by Isreal.

Although it was a disappointing end to a tournament his nation were expected to win, praise has been forthcoming for the young striker as a result of his scoring exploits.

Marcos Leonardo gets compared to Sergio Aguero

Arsenal supporters like to weigh in on their verdict on the club’s latest transfer news.

One of the topics discussed on The Arsenal Show YouTube channel was the latest links to Leonardo with journalist Steve Kay waxing lyrical about the Brazilian talent.

Kay said: “He’s a quality player, compared to Sergio Aguero, very similar sort of player, he’d be someone of interest of Arteta.

“He’s very fast, he’s very quick, great ability on the ball, prolific goalscorer, in the mould of Sergio Aguero, personally someone I think would do very well at Arsenal.

“He’s only young, I think he’d cost around £15-20m, he will be an incredible addition to the squad and maybe they could still bring another striker in, it will be interesting to see, Marcos Leonardo, keep an eye out.”

Are comparisons to Sergio Aguero justified?

Aguero is one of the greatest strikers of this generation and although he’s retired now, he left behind an untouchable legacy.

A relentless finisher, who scored all types of goals, Aguero ended his career with 385 career goals, 260 of which were scored at Manchester City as he helped them become a trophy-winning juggernaut.

The sensational Argentine ended his playing days as the fifth-highest scorer in Premier League history, finishing above the likes of Thierry Henry, Michael Owen and Frank Lampard.

Indeed, comparing Leonardo to such a world-class forward is too soon, but he has displayed the attributes that liken him to Aguero.

The youngster’s goal record in Brazil is not to be sniffed at, particularly as he was playing for a struggling side.

It is, therefore, understandable that Kay would compare the prolific youngster to Aguero but he still has a long way to go before he can fully justify the hype.

He can begin that justification by signing for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
