French outlet RMC Sport have revealed that AS Monaco have denied any interest in signing Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira on loan.
The Uruguayan is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid. He has had a torrid time there since joining them in October and rumours have surfaced saying that he will find a new club before the window shuts on Monday.
Mikel Arteta was quizzed about talks with Monaco over Torreira in his press conference today. The Arsenal boss didn’t confirm or deny the French club’s interest, but he claimed that Edu is monitoring the situation very closely.
He said, as per Arsenal.com: “We have been talking to Lucas, Edu has been very close to the situation. He hasn’t been playing as many minutes as he would like, as we would like. But to be fair the team is doing so well in Spain and it is understandable they don’t change the team so much.”
“We just want to be right behind Lucas, protect him, help him make the right decisions for the future. So let’s see what happens. But we are monitoring the situation very closely.”
RMC claim that Monaco boss Niko Kovac wants his side’s young players to step up instead of a new signing. The report says that he has full faith in his own midfielders, and he is not interested in Torreira or any other player in that position.
Arsenal Insider’s view:
Arteta’s comments about Torreira were very interesting. It is excellent to know that the club are in constant dialogue with the Uruguayan and they are doing everything possible to make sure that he remains happy.
Torreira isn’t short of offers. He has been linked with plenty of clubs in Spain and in Italy, and even if Monaco have no interest in him, it is likely he will find a new side before the window shuts on Monday.
It is extremely important for Arsenal that Torreira plays regularly until the end of the season. Even if Arteta does not want him, his transfer value has to be protected so that we make some money off him if we decide to sell him in the summer.
