Arsenal are not expected to make a move to rival either Manchester City or Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of Sandro Tonali this summer.
Back in January, Arsenal explored a move for Tonali; however, Newcastle made it very clear that the midfielder would not be leaving.
Since then, several clubs like Spurs and Man City have joined the race to sign the Italian international, and a deal for the Gunners looks to be off the table.
The Gunners are on the hunt to add another midfielder this summer, but it seems very unlikely that it will be Tonali heading to the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal not expected to move for Sandro Tonali
David Ornstein is no longer expecting Arsenal to move for Sandro Tonali this summer, with an Eberechi Eze repeat seeming very unlikely.
Spurs and City are now working on deals for the 26-year-old, who is set to leave Newcastle after three years on Tyneside.
Mikel Arteta wants to sign a new midfielder this summer, but that player will not be Tonali, as things stand.
Speaking on The Athletic’s Podcast, Ornstein revealed: “A lot of people have mentioned Arsenal. They’ve had a longstanding interest in him. We reported that on deadline day of the January transfer window.
“I’m sure they’ve explored it again for this summer. But right now, at the time of recording this, I don’t know of them pursuing it in the way that Tottenham and Manchester City certainly appear to be.”
£87 million is the fee Newcastle want for Tonali, and Arsenal would be better off putting their trust in Myles Lewis-Skelly than spending that much on a new midfielder.
👀 NAME a BETTER midfield target for Arsenal than Ayyoub Bouaddi… I bet you CAN’T…
🌟 The 18-year-old looked so good vs Brazil's at the World Cup!
Arsenal have been targeting Ayyoub Bouaddi, with the teenager really impressing for Morocco during the World Cup group stages.
Patrick Vieira is a big fan of Bouaddi, but the Gunners could face strong competition to get him, with Real Madrid also expressing an interest.
