Goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson returned to Arsenal today from his loan at Cardiff City, but he will not stay for long.
The 28-year-old joined in 2020 as a replacement for Emi Martinez and a backup to Bernd Leno, but a few disastrous performances showed he was not at the required level, and he embarked on several loan spells away in the years that followed.
However, with just hours remaining in the transfer window, and the player returning from his latest failed spell at Cardiff City, it now appears that Arsenal are going to cut ties with him completely.
Arsenal to terminate Runar Alex Runarsson’s contract
Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Arsenal will terminate the Iceland International’s contract today, before he completes a free transfer to FC Copenhagen.
“Arsenal are set to terminate Alex Runarsson contract with immediate effect, also breaking Cardiff City loan. He’s set to join Copenhagen,” he posted on X.
Runarsson made six appearances for Arsenal, conceding seven times, and questions were raised about the recruitment process which led to the club signing him for £1.8m on a four-year deal.
Edu Gaspar to terminate another Arsenal contract

Arsenal director Edu Gaspar has been criticised over the years as Arsenal terminated the contracts of several players at great cost, with it claimed that he struggles to negotiate transfer fees for him.
However, in this case, a termination is completely justified. Runarsson’s contract expires at the end of the season, and no club interested in him would be willing to pay any fee for him.
It was not a huge outlay on the goalkeeper at the time, and it is a relatively small loss the club are making on him, but his performance levels meant that any interest in him at all comes as something of a surprise, and it seems unlikely that he would be first choice at his next club.
