Fabrizio Romano has said Arsenal have opened talks with Reiss Nelson to sign the 23-year-old winger down to a new contract.
Taking to Twitter, the Italian sports journalist revealed that the Gunners are in talks with the attacker’s representatives over signing a new deal, with Mikel Arteta keen to keep the Hale End academy graduate at the club beyond this year.
Nelson’s current contract is due to expire at the end of this season, yet despite some incredible moments this season, the former England youth international, is yet to put pen-to-paper on a new deal, with many supporters keen on the winger to stay with Arsenal.
The youngster scored a dramatic last-second winner against AFC Bournemouth last month to secure a 3-2 win for Arsenal, with Nelson also bagging a brace and an assist earlier in the season in a 5-0 victory at home against Nottingham Forest.
Indeed, Nelson remaining at Arsenal will be a huge coup for the club, with the attacker showing this season that he is more than capable of performing in the Premier League and providing crucial cover for the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.
Arsenal need to secure Nelson to a new contract as soon as possible
Nelson’s performances alone this season warrant the winger a new deal, with the winner against Bournemouth already one of the highlights of the campaign and a moment that could prove crucial for Arsenal in their quest to win a first Premier League title since 2004.
Although Nelson has hardly featured this year due to injuries and limited squad rotation, the academy hero has earned his stripes this season under Arteta, and many Arsenal fans will be happy to see the attacker pen a long-term contract with the north London side for the years to come.
