Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Arsenal are targeting Douglas Luiz ahead of Ruben Neves.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Al Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves in the upcoming January transfer window, as reported by Sport. The Gunners have also been credited with a keen interest in Aston Villa ace Douglas Luiz, as per The Standard.
Arsenal are clearly keen to add to their midfield options this winter, as Thomas Partey’s future at the club is in doubt. Even if the Ghanaian were to remain at the Emirates Stadium, his injury record means that the north London club could still really do with reinforcements in that part of the pitch.
Whilst Arsenal will only have a limited budget to work with this winter, there is a clear determination to strengthen significantly in midfield. That may mean that some transfer market creativity is in order, as neither Neves or Luiz would be likely to come cheap.
Sporting director Edu has a tough job on his hands in trying to strike a deal for either player. However, Arsenal do at least seem to have decided who their primary target is, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on The Here We Go podcast, the transfer journalist said, “Arteta’s always been a big fan of Ruben Neves, since he was at Wolves…But, from what I’m hearing, Arsenal keep seeing Douglas Luiz as the best option as a midfielder.”

Arsenal want Douglas Luiz over Ruben Neves
Even though Arteta admires the Portuguese ace’s qualities, Luiz is at the top of Arsenal’s shopping list.
It is easy to see why the Gunners are so keen on the Brazilian. The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the most effective midfield operators in the Premier League in recent seasons. A tenacious, and technically gifted presence, the Aston Villa man is capable of making an impact at both ends of the pitch.
Luiz would be an excellent addition to the Arsenal squad. He would add some much-needed depth to Arteta’s options, and the prospect of him forming a dominant partnership with Declan Rice is a tantalising one for Arsenal fans to consider.
It does seem, though, that securing the ten-cap Brazil international’s services this January will be a tall order. The Villans are determined to keep him and are thought to have put a £60 million price tag on the player.
It will be fascinating to see if Arsenal revert to an attempt to lure Neves to the Emirates Stadium, should they fail to sign Luiz.
