The January transfer window has officially opened for 2025, with Arsenal preparing for a big month of potential switches.

With injury troubles across the squad, Mikel Arteta will be looking for potential opportunities to bolster the team in key areas.

While Arsenal fans will be focused on potential incomings, there will have to be a focus on outgoings from the Emirates Stadium too.

As the window has just opened, one deal has already been completed in the first bit of January business for the Gunners.

Arsenal confirm Josh Robinson transfer to join Wigan

The first piece of business in the January transfer window has seen Arsenal academy star Josh Robinson leave on a permanent deal.

The full-back has joined League One outfit Wigan Athletic, with a three-and-a-half-year contract signed with the Latics.

In his time with Arsenal, Robinson was on the fringes of the first-team, getting involved in training sessions.

While the defender never made an appearance for the senior team, he did make several squads, including the substitutes bench in four Champions League matches.

A new opportunity now awaits the right-back, who can also play at centre-back, with Wigan having a track record for developing young talent.

What Josh Robinson has said about leaving Arsenal

In a statement from the official Arsenal website, the club said: “We thank Josh for his contribution to the club during his time with us and wish him all the best for his next chapter with Wigan Athletic.”

As for Robinson himself, he told Wigan Athletic: “I am very excited to start my journey here.

“It’s a very big Club, and I am looking forward to seeing what the season holds. I just want to hit the ground running, and hopefully do well for the Football Club.”

Robinson is unlikely to be the last Arsenal academy star on the move this January, whether it’s permanent or on loan.

Several players will be looking to earn more game time and forge ahead in their own careers, which may only be found elsewhere.

With plenty of teams looking to land some talented youngsters for their own, it would be a surprise if no other Arsenal academy players were to make the switch this winter.
