Arsenal’s pursuit of a new left winger has thrown up several names this summer.

Morgan Rogers has been the most prominent name being mooted, while Christos Tzolis is also being considered.

But Bradley Barcola has arguably been the most eye-catching name linked with a move to the Emirates, having made an impact at the World Cup for France despite a frustrating second half of the season at PSG.

Arsenal have reportedly prepared an opening bid in the region of £80million, though PSG are believed to want more, with a host of Europe’s biggest clubs all circling for the winger.

PSG seem open to letting Barcola leave if they can bring in a suitable replacement, which could well be RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande.

Christian Purslow claims Barcola wants a move to the Premier League

Speaking on The Football Boardroom, former Aston Villa and Liverpool chief executive Christian Purslow gave a fresh update on the situation.

“My sources are telling me, you know, Barcola — for those of our audience who haven’t followed it closely — obviously had another brilliant season at PSG, but after an injury mid-season, struggled to get starting slots with Kvaratskhelia and with Doue on both sides and Dembele through the middle. I don’t think Barcola started a quarter-final, semi-final or the final of the Champions League.”

He continued. “A player of that ability, he’s already lit up this tournament. Not homegrown, very few of PSG’s players are. He came through the Lyon academy. They paid, I think, €45-50million to Lyon for the boy. I’m hearing he wants a move to England, and Arsenal are looking like they’re at the front of the queue at the moment.”

On the chances of Arsenal signing Barcola, Purslow said, “I think that’s one to watch, and the balance of probability is, I think, that deal gets done. When? Less clear, but I’m pretty sure that is a marriage made in heaven.”

Arsenal had previously been viewed as more likely to land Rogers than Barcola, given the gap between PSG’s valuation and Arsenal’s opening offer.

But if the player’s own preference genuinely is Arsenal, that could tip things in the Gunners’ favour.

Barcola has almost been reduced to a bit-part player at PSG and is seemingly looking for a fresh start elsewhere.

If Purslow’s sources are accurate, that fresh start could well be in north London.
