‘I’d go for…’ Gary Lineker says Arsenal should sign £40m striker but Pep Guardiola could hijack transfer switch

Arsenal’s striker woes are likely to see them enter the transfer market over the summer to add some much-needed firepower to the side.

The Gunners are currently without a recognised centre-forward, with injuries piling up in the forward ranks, but the goal-scoring problems existed long before those absences.

Mikel Arteta has long been linked with a possible striker addition, with the likes of Alexander Isak, Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko all linked in the market.

Despite those links, Gary Lineker has suggested another option Arsenal should look at in the coming transfer window.

Gary Lineker suggests Liam Delap to Arsenal transfer

With Arsenal looking to enter the market, there are a few promising options available, even despite the lack of a world-class striker out there.

With that in mind, former centre-forward Gary Lineker has suggested that the Gunners should go and sign Ipswich striker Liam Delap.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, he said: “If I were them [Arsenal], I’d go for Delap at Ipswich.

“He’s young, not entirely proven but he’s scored quite a lot of goals in the Premier League for a team that’s obviously struggled, having been promoted Ipswich.”

Delap joined Ipswich last summer for a fee in the region of £20million, which appears a bargain after the season he has had.

The 22-year-old has hit double-figures for goals scored this campaign, showing plenty of confidence in front of goal.

With plenty of room left to grow and develop, Delap seems a top option that is also homegrown and would meet the registration requirements.

However, Pep Guardiola could have a big say in any possible deal for the striker.

Liam Delap transfer clause could cause Arsenal problem

If Liam Delap is one on the radar for Arsenal, then they may have some issues due to a reported clause in his Ipswich deal.

According to the Athletic, there is a £40million buyback clause in the move to the Tractor Boys from Manchester City.

It means Pep Guardiola could, in theory, hijack a deal to either keep the player or move him on for a greater profit.

It was something Alan Shearer touched on in The Rest is Football podcast, stating: “Didn’t I read he had a buyback clause or percentage clause?

“I mean that I guess if he has got a buyback for a certain price for Man City because if they wanted to make a few quid they could buy him back and sell him for more.”

That could cause a potential twist for Arsenal in the market, depending on their approach moving forward.
