Jurgen Klopp reportedly wanted Arsenal-linked attacker instead of Mohamed Salah in 2017

Arsenal have Borussia Dortmund star Julian Brandt in their shortlist for the January transfer window, according to The Athletic.

Mikel Arteta is on the lookout for a new creator and the German international would be a good option. Brandt was sensational last season. He scored seven goals and provided 13 assists for Dortmund in all competitions.

He is hugely versatile having played on both flanks, in attacking midfield, as a number eight and also as a centre-forward in his career. That will give Arteta a ton of options if we were to sign him, and if the Arsenal boss needs any more convincing, a quick phone call to Jurgen Klopp should do the trick.

The Liverpool boss is a huge fan of his compatriot. Klopp wanted to sign Brandt from Bayer Leverkusen back in the summer of 2017, but the attacker chose to stay put as he feared for regular game time at Anfield.

The Egyptian, since joining Liverpool, has become one of the best players in the Premier League, if not the world. Klopp wouldn’t be too fussed about missing out on Brandt now, but he certainly wasn’t a happy man three-and-a-half years ago.

Should Arsenal sign Brandt?

Arteta has made up his mind – he will not play Mesut Ozil. That has cost Arsenal a lot of creativity in the final third, and they are desperate for someone to come in and fill that void.

Brandt, on paper at least, is the perfect option. He was viewed by many as Ozil’s successor in the German national team and Joachim Low even handed him the number 10 shirt that the Arsenal man had made his own in his last two years as an international.

Houssem Aouar is reportedly Arsenal’s number one target but he is an unlikely option next month. Brandt could well be the man Arteta opts for, and he has all the qualities to succeed here in England.
