Mikel Arteta wants Nico Williams to do one thing now or Arsenal will not bid for him

Arsenal have had Nico Williams on their shortlist for a long time.

The Athletic Bilbao star is one of the most exciting wingers on the planet. He was absolutely incredible in the 2023/24 season and played a big part in helping Spain win Euro 2024.

Arsenal could do with a top-class winger who can play on both flanks. Williams definitely checks that box and remains admired by everyone at the club.

But, the Spaniard has to do one thing before Arsenal formalise their interest.

Arsenal’s stance on signing Nico Williams in 2025

Arsenal fans are hoping that their club will be active in the January transfer window.

The Gunners are already nine points behind league leaders Liverpool, and even though a lot of the season is still left to be played, there are concerns over whether they can turn things around.

Arsenal’s biggest issue this season has been their attack. Creativity was almost non-existent when Martin Odegaard was out, and they haven’t been as efficient in front of goal as they would’ve liked.

A new attacker in January could make a big difference, and Football Transfers have revealed that Williams is still highly admired by Mikel Arteta and Arsenal.

However, the Gunners are not going to jump in and make a bid until one thing happens.

The report claims that any Arsenal move for Williams would ‘first and foremost depend on the 22-year-old providing a stronger indication that he’s ready to leave Athletic Club’

That didn’t happen in the summer and there has been no indication yet ahead of the January transfer window. So, as things stand, Williams is not a serious option for Arsenal.

Arsenal are eyeing a move for another La Liga star

It is very clear that Arsenal are keeping their eyes open for reinforcements out wide.

The Gunners were linked with plenty of names in the summer. They ended up bringing in Raheem Sterling on loan later on deadline day, but everyone knows that he isn’t a long-term option.

Williams would be a great buy, but reports have revealed that Arsenal are interested in signing Alex Baena of Villarreal as well.

The Spaniard provided the most assists in Europe’s top-five leagues in 2023/24 – 18 – and already has five to his name this season. He was scouted by Arsenal in November’s international break.

If Williams shows no interest in leaving his side in 2025, Arsenal could turn their focus on Baena.
