Bruno Guimaraes has informed Newcastle United that he wants to leave to join Arsenal.

The news was broken by David Ornstein on Wednesday, and has now been confirmed by North East reporter Keith Downie, who has revealed the nature of the situation from a Newcastle perspective.

“The situation regarding Bruno Guimaraes is — he has essentially told Newcastle he wants to leave,” Downie said, speaking on his YouTube channel.

“What I can say from Newcastle’s point of view is that they are astonished, astounded, confused, perplexed by the fact that Bruno Guimaraes has said he wants to explore a move to Arsenal, when Arsenal have yet to make an offer or even directly contacted Newcastle regarding the Brazilian international.

“It’s incredible. I’ve never heard of this before.”

Downie drew a direct comparison with last summer’s Alexander Isak situation. “At least last year with Alexander Isak, Liverpool made that opening bid of around £100million. So there was something concrete to fall back on.

“But with Bruno Guimaraes, Arsenal have yet to contact Newcastle. Newcastle are amazed by this.”

He added that it remains unclear whether the approach came directly from Guimaraes or through his agents. “I’m not sure if it’s them or it’s Bruno who have contacted Newcastle to let them know.

“But Newcastle are not wanting to comment, not wanting to get involved. They’re wanting to maintain their dignity and professionalism.

“But someone has told Newcastle that he wants to pursue an opportunity with Arsenal. An opportunity that has not been made to Newcastle just yet.”

Arsenal need to make a move for Bruno Guimaraes quickly

The wheels for a move are clearly in motion. Kia Joorabchian is involved in Guimaraes’ camp and has previous history with Arsenal, being a self-proclaimed fan himself.

But Arsenal are still yet to make an official approach.

Having passed up on Sandro Tonali over the finances involved, Arsenal now find themselves in a position where their primary midfield target has publicly pushed for a move, yet still haven’t made a formal bid.

Newcastle have already sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Tonali to Tottenham this summer. They are under no financial pressure to sell.

The longer Arsenal wait to make their move, the more difficult Newcastle can make it.
