Arsenal have been linked with several midfielders this summer, but they face competition for a number of their targets.

Whilst Real Sociedad pair Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi are of great interest to Mikel Arteta, there have also been links with Benfica starlet Joao Neves.

Neves, 19, is coveted by a lot of Europe’s top clubs after an outstanding season in Portugal, which saw him earn a place in the Portuguese Euro 2024 squad.

Arsenal were credited with an interest in him, but with a high price tag of over £100m, it seemed unlikely that they would be able to sign him this summer.

However, it now appears that Neves is set to move to Paris Saint-Germain, and for a lower fee than previously anticipated.

PSG advance in talks for Arsenal target Joao Neves

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Neves is open to a move to PSG, and the French side are ahead of interested Premier League sides in the race for his signature.

“Paris Saint-Germain are ready to advance in talks with Benfica for João Neves after player’s green light. João wants the move, PSG believe they are ahead of Premier League clubs; talks taking place with Benfica. No club-to-club agreement yet but negotiations continue,” he posted on X.

Portuguese outlet MaisFutebol have also claimed that a deal could be agreed for Neves for around £60m, a much lower fee than originally anticipated.

Joao Neves could be the ideal long-term solution for Arsenal in midfield. He has shown an outstanding ability on the ball, in terms of passing, dribbling and ball retention, and he could be the perfect player to join Arteta’s midfield alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.

His price tag was a sticking point, but if he is available for £60m, he may be the ideal signing for this summer, and he could become a starter for the next decade if he develops well.

However, competing with PSG for his signature will be incredibly difficult. Whilst Arteta may be able to convince him that the footballing project at Arsenal could be better for his development, Arsenal may not be able to match the wages offered to Neves by the Parisians.
