According to a report from Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal are leading Tottenham in the race to sign AS Roma midfielder Ebrima Darboe.

The 19-year-old Gambian’s performances for the senior side have been phenomenal. The report claims that Darboe has ‘amazed everyone’ this month, while Roma boss Paulo Fonseca called him the key difference-maker in their Derby della Capitale win over Lazio last weekend. (Football Italia)

The teenager has all the qualities to succeed at the top level and it looks like Arsenal have identified him as a potential target. However, Roma’s sporting director Tiago Pinto has no plans of entertaining any bids for the midfielder this summer.

He believes that Darboe is ready to become a fundamental part of Roma once Jose Mourinho takes over the club. That makes it almost impossible for Arsenal or Spurs to sign him, but stranger things have happened in football.

Edu is a magician when it comes to bringing young players to the club and Darboe could well be his next big find. The teenager will enter the final two years of his contract this summer, and that opens the door for potential negotiations.

Ebrima Darboe could replace Matteo Guendouzi at Arsenal

Guendouzi is almost guaranteed to leave Arsenal this summer. His relationship with Mikel Arteta couldn’t possibly be any worse and it doesn’t look like it’s something that can be repaired over the next two months.

That really is a shame. The Frenchman had all the qualities to become one of the best midfielders in the world. His attitude has cost him his chance at Arsenal, and that may well be why Edu is looking at Darboe.

The Gambian is just as good as Guendouzi was when he joined Arsenal, if not better. He is solid defensively, good with the ball at his feet and unlike the former Lorient man, he has an eye for goals as well.

Darboe is hugely versatile too. He can play as a number six, in a box-to-box role as well as on the left flank. That makes him a very attractive option for Arsenal and potentially, a huge upgrade on Guendouzi.
